Eyes for A Tell Tale Heart, Royal Opera House, phase 2

March 26, 2011 § Leave a comment

Finn called me up from Austria very late at night immediately after I hit the send button.
Very positive excited feedback, which encouraged me in knowing that I am going in the right direction. Phew. Relief.
Anyway, he decided eye 4 was the one...

Here are a couple of the (5) eyes. Quite penetrating looking and hard, with interference lines.
That’s what we need for the broken down stage set.

and these are my eye series that he’s animated. Just basic eyes…

Finito Finito, say the eyes. To sleep I shall go.

These are my very sophisticated work schedules.

“Watching and Waiting”

This is a postcard piece I just sent off for the charity Many Olgilvy Hands for their Secret Art Sale on the 6th Feb. It’s just a small piece and I just quickly had to decide on something to make, as I’m past the deadline (Monday just gone, oops). It’s called

Watching and Waiting and it seems to have a similar feel and style to my series: Distances Between I & I, which have far more meaning to me really. I’ve posted them also, so you can see the relationship of a separation or divide happening. Not keen on the threading in this one but had to go with it once I’d begun.

“Distances Between I & I”

These are the five pieces from last year’s Distances Between I & I series that relate to the above post Watching & Waiting. I want to continue these indefinitely through the years ahead with other people in them. Slow burn I like.

(ps: any volunteers to be in the images, please help, I would LOVE to make more of these. Free direction, free lunch, free said artwork, naturally)

Eyes for A Tell Tale Heart, Royal Opera House, phase 1

So this is stage 1 of my eye artwork for Finn Ross.
(video and projection designer  – http://www.behance.net/finnross)

It is a short opera called A Tell Tale Heart, with this eye of an old man referred to again and again in the libretta. A younger man has murdered him and the eye keeps haunting him. It’s to be used throughout the opera in the film projection as it is a key element.
After our initial meeting, we decided I would produce 5 eyes in different styles, then he’ll select one and produce a final series based on a single style. Strange to be drawing again in all different media, but nice. I love his briefing, so clear, so this is this, this is when, this is what you get paid. Refreshing.
Very happy.

These are the initial eyes to get an initial feel for where we’re going. You can click to enlarge.

So what will he choose, I think I know. Eye 4..? (I hope it’s not Eye 1 as that’s a pain to draw -Graphite powder and an eraser)

Art journal’s return

I seem to be back in the habit of using my art journal.
It was something we were obliged to do at art school, but since I graduated a few years ago, I’ve not really kept one up and when you are immersed in your artmaking, you don’t always want to open a journal. But since Berlin and this year really, I seem to have alot of developmental ideas and research going on and pages and pages are filling up. Even if I am not actually using them, there is some strange security and pleasure in keeping all these little ideas and peculiar expressions of self inside the two covers of a book.

Its a nice place to be strange and whimsical without having to care. For example make really bad drawings and scribble just for the sake of it. I feel better when these thoughts are down somewhere and a bit sad when the oddest of thoughts disappear without being properly remembered.
I’m a scraps of paper girl; inclined towards writing on tiny bits of paper that I stick in my pockets and my book. Quite possibly I’m made of scraps of paper :)

Where Am I?
